The Miami Beach Jazz Festival is the brainchild of event founder and producer, Carmen J. Cartiglia. "There are many music festivals that call themselves 'Jazz' events, but are all too often watered down with other types of music", says Mr. Cartiglia. The Miami Beach Jazz Festival will be going back to the basics and will bring in some exceptional true jazz artists from around the world, as well as introducing some outstanding local artists.
Our upcoming festival has many functions taking place that lead up to our “Grand Finale” on January 10th, 2015. Some of these include our student competition, with the winners to be announced in November. We will also offer Master Classes for the students, various “Pop-Up-Performances” at several locations in the South Florida region, and some other surprises to let everyone know that in MIAMI BEACH, JAZZ IS HERE TO STAY!!
Our focus is to keep Jazz in the forefront of the cultural expansion that the greater Miami area is experiencing. All to often the fact that jazz is the only true American art form gets forgotten. Remember, we gave jazz to the world, now it’s time to welcome it home!.
Mr. Cartiglia proudly served his country in the US Air Force in late 60's during the VietNam conflict. He was recruited into the Tactical Air Command as a systems analyst and computer programmer at the headquarters level. During his 4 year enlistment he created, designed, wrote and debugged two major Air Force wide systems, one to control material handling throughout the world and one to control and monitor personal as they were transferred around the world.
Upon his honorable discharge in 1970 he was employed and worked as general manager in his family owned retail business for 12 years.
After closing his retail business he decided to step into the business community and became a commercial real estate broker in Fairfield County, Connecticut, one of the most active areas in the country.
As he became more actively involved with commercial real estate, he applied for and received his Securities License and stared an ancillary business writing and selling securities until the market crashed in the late 1980's.
Being a true entrepreneur he immediately assessed his situation, and in 1988 formed a company to produce & manage trade shows and exhibits. This company is still in business celebrating over 25 successful years having produced and managed hundreds of expos for a variety of exceptional companies throughout the US & Canada.
In 2010, his company won the Best in Trumbull award distributed by the US Commerce Department. The USCA "Best of Local Business" Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.
Mr. Cartiglia has been an active member of both the Direct Selling Association, and the Direct Selling Education Foundation since 1990. He has served both organizations on many levels, including sitting on the DSA Board of Directors, Chairman of the DSA Supplier Advisory Committee and various committees such as the DSA Member Services Committee. He has also served the DSEF for many years as a member of the DSEF Development Committee.
After moving to Florida in 2009 he wanted to curtail his travel schedule and do something locally that would have a national impact. He realized that although the Miami area (known for its music festivals,) hosted many events throughout the year, they did not have a true jazz festival. Mr. Cartiglia combined his love of music and his passion for creating exciting venues and formed the Miami Jazz Fest, LLC in 2011.

Garo Artinian has over 39 years of experience in senior management. From 1994 to 2001, Artinian held the position of President and CEO of Draka Holding USA. From 2001 to 2004 he was the COO and Deputy Chairman of Draka Holding NV (Amsterdam). From 2004 to 2006 he held the position of CEO and Chairman of the Management Board of Draka Holding NV, a publically traded company and one of the world’s leading manufacturers of wire, cable and fiber products of the telecommunications, power, automotive, oil and gas and elevator industries. With a total turnover of approximately $3 billion, Draka consisted of 60 operating companies in 25 countries. Draka was acquired/merged with Prysmian in 2011.
Mr. Artinian’s previous executive positions included President of Delta Suprenant, President and CEO of Staveley NDT Technologies, a subsidiary of Staveley PLC and Vice President and General Manager of Allied Signal (Prestolite and Fisher Scientific divisions). He started his career with ITT Corp.
In 1977 Mr. Artinian was the recipient of the Charles D. Scott “Executive of the Year” award. He has also sat on numerous international and US boards.
Mr. Artinian has a Baccalaureate in Science and Mathematics from Lycee La Liberte. He also attended McGill University studying pre-med. He received his degree in rubber and polymer technology from Loyola University in association with Akron University.
He is fluent in English, French, Arabic and Armenian. Since retiring he has founded Artinian Holding, a global business advisor.
Currently, Mr. Artinian sits on the Board of Supervisors of the Northern Palm Beach County Water Improvement District, and also serves as a Director of Dura-Line Corp. since January 2012. He volunteers his time as a counselor with SCORE and with two non-profit organizations, Extraordinary Charities and S.B. Ideas.
He is married with 2 sons and 4 grandchildren.
Austrian-born pianist and composer Markus Gottschlich belongs to the young lions of the Florida jazz scene. Like his own life story, Markus’ music reflects a unique blend of “old world” and “new world”. In his captivating live performances, his lyricism and technique contribute to his highly-individual sound.
Markus’ debut solo album in 2008, When the Day is Done, received tremendous critical acclaim. For his sophomore album, Of Places Between, released in the summer of 2013, Markus teamed up with Grammy Award-winning musicians Federico Britos and Jose Javier Freire. The global flavor with which his music is infused reveals an artistic journey that stretches far beyond his Austrian roots.
Born and raised in Vienna, Austria, Markus grew up in what was once Beethoven’s apartment. After receiving a classical piano education from an early age on, he started exploring Jazz and moved to the US where he attended Admiral Farragut Academy, Concordia College - NY, and graduated from Western Connecticut State University.
Markus currently serves as the Artistic Director of the Miami Jazz Fest and as the curator of a Concert Series on Miami Beach. He keeps a busy schedule performing and conducting clinics in the US and Europe, while working on new compositions and commissioned works.
Steven Haas has the distinction of being the first Board Chairman of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) from our travel and tourism industry’s important restaurant sector.
He is well known in Greater Miami’s tourism industry for his dedication to raising awareness of the importance and value of providing excellent customer service. As GMCVB Board Chair, Haas’ commitment to customer service is evident in the GMCVB’s Miami Begins with Me customer service initiative developed to raise the bar of customer service in Greater Miami. As a result of the GMCVB initiative, Miami International Airport (MIA) has taken customer service to a new level through Miami Begins with MIA, a program that requires all 35,000+ employees at MIA to complete customer service training. Also, during Haas’ GMCVB Chairmanship, the Port of Miami provided the Miami Begins with Me customer service training to its employees and the program became a key element of the training for Miami-Dade taxi cab drivers.
Haas opened his highly anticipated new restaurant, City Hall the Restaurant, located on Biscayne Boulevard in the heart of Miami’s performing arts district in June 2011. Prior to undertaking his current project, Haas was co-owner and operating partner for Soyka Restaurant/News Café Corp. In the 11 years prior, Haas was the General Manager for China Grill, Tuscan Steak, Red Square, Delano and Social at the Sagamore Hotel -- all under the umbrella of China Grill Management. He also opened restaurants for the China Grill Corp in London, NYC, Vegas and Mexico City
His stellar career in restaurant management also includes positions at many of Miami’s finest restaurants, including The Forge, Joe’s Stone Crab, , Monty’s Stone Crab and the first Independent business unit at the Sheraton Bal Harbour.
Steve is past-Chair of the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority and takes pride in being the architect of the GMCVB’s highly successful Miami Spice Restaurant Month.
Steve is a graduate of Florida International University, Miami Dade College, and Miami Beach Senior High School. He has been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and named to the Travel and Tourism Hall of Fame and most recently honored as the Business Man of the year at the Gala for the Miami Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.
Jürgen Borsch has been a career diplomat in the German Foreign Service for more than 30 years. He had his first assignment in Warsaw, Poland, before the changes of 1989, followed by a three years posting to the German Embassy in Damascus, Syria, during the occupation of Kuwait by Iraq and the Gulf War.
In 1991 he served as Deputy Secretary General of the XVth Antarctic Treaty Conference in Bonn. In the following years he was desk officer for EU external relations, including the enlargement negotiations with the accessing member states Austria, Sweden, and Finland, and the EU reconstruction efforts for Bosnia and Hercegovina after the Dayton Peace Agreement of 1995.
From 1996 to 1999 he had his first assignment in the United States, serving at the German Embassy in Washington, D.C., in the Political Department and as Chief of Staff of the Ambassador. After 3 years in Berlin, he was Consul in Hong Kong from 2002 til 2005, where he was Member of the Board of the Hong Kong Chapter of the American Field Service and of the German Swiss International School.
Returning to Berlin, Jürgen Borsch was deputy head, from 2008 on head, of the crisis response center of the Federal Foreign Office until summer 2013, dealing with a large number of crises involving German citizens abroad, including natural catastrophes as the earthquake in Haiti, the tsunami in Japan and the political developments of the Arabic Spring in 2010.
Since July 2013, Jürgen Borsch is Consul General for Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, in Miami. He is married to Iris Borsch and has two grown children
Mr. Chase is an honors graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law School. At Yale, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the most prominent national collegiate Honor Society, and graduated magna cum laude. At Harvard Law School, Mr. Chase graduated with honors, earning his JD degree cum laude.
Mr. Chase began his legal career with a large Washington, D.C. law firm, focusing his practice on Communications and First Amendment law. During this period, Mr. Chase represented such media giants as CBS, the Times-Mirror Company, Capital Cities Communications and Time, Inc. In connection with his First Amendment work, Mr. Chase represented journalists who came under fire during the famous Watergate litigation before Judge John Sirica and in criminal proceedings leading to the dramatic resignation from office of Vice President Spiro Agnew.
Mr. Chase then became Associate General Counsel of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) Television Network, dealing with television program and music rights, on-air legal issues and program funding. After two years in the PBS Counsel's Office, he was appointed Director of PBS's News and Public Affairs Programming and later the top national PBS programming executive (Vice President for Programming). During this period, he was PBS's “point-man” in charge of such projects as EYES ON THE PRIZE, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, FRONTLINE, THE NEWSHOUR, Carl Sagan's COSMOS series, NOVA, and the CIVIL WAR series. In 1991, he moved to South Florida as Senior Vice-President of National Production for South Florida's PBS affiliate.
After his high-level hands-on experience in the world of television and film production, in 1996 Mr. Chase returned to the practice of entertainment law in Miami.
He represents Spanish- and English-language musical artists; record companies; producers; composers; television stars; filmmakers; actors; models; authors; screenwriters; live performers; visual artists; and Internet and New Media entrepreneurs. He has lectured regularly on the representation of media celebrities and the legal "do's and don'ts" of music, television and film production.
The Miami Jazz Fest, LLC, is a proud supporter of a charitable foundation dedicated to bring awareness to the public and to help find the cause and a cure for the little known disease entitled Scleroderma. A portion of each ticket sold will go to the American Society For Scleroderma Research, a grass roots non-profit organization founded in 2004. Woody Graber is currently President of Woody Graber & Associates, a public relations and marketing firm located at 9001 SW 125 Terrace in Miami, FL. The agency began operations in October 1987 and has handled a wide range of accounts from entertainment and tourism to business and financial, including Internet and E-Commerce. Among the clients WG&A has provided services for are: Live Nation of Florida (a division of the world’s largest concert promoter), the 20,000 seat Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm and the Amphitheatre in Tampa; The Fillmore Miami Beach; Revolution Live (with it’s ancillary products: The Green Room and America’s Backyard); Aezra Records; Pyramid Records; the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau; Miami Children’s Museum; Martinair Holland Airlines; Bonaventure Resort and Spa; Omni International Hotel; The Stephen Talkhouse and Stella Blue, live music clubs on South Beach; the South Florida Art Center; Mallah, Furman & Co., one of Miami’s largest accounting firms; PTG Florida, which brings touring Broadway shows to Florida; and Woody’s on the Beach, the former nightclub and resort development of Rolling Stone guitarist Ronnie Wood. Mr. Graber also was responsible for generating a great deal of national and international publicity for the dedication of Miami Beach’s Holocaust Memorial.
Mr. Graber, who attended college at the State University of New York at Buffalo, began his marketing career in 1975 with the Art Blum Agency in San Francisco, CA. While with the Blum Agency he worked on tourism, real estate, retail and entertainment accounts, completing successful programs for the Grubb & Ellis Development Corp., The San Francisco Apparel Mart, KABL Radio, Ripley’s International, Cost Plus, The Renaissance Pleasure Faire and the Aid to Adoption of Special Kids (AASK). In fact, he handled publicity for the AASK movie, “Who Are The DeBolts And Where Did They Get Nineteen Kids”, which won an Academy Award for “Best Documentary”.
In 1978, Mr. Graber moved to Atlanta, GA to head up the marketing programs for the Royal Stone Corporation, a leading fine quality gemstone importing and wholesaling firm. In 1979 he was transferred to the Company’s main headquarters in Coral Gables, FL where he continued to design advertising and public relations strategies for gemstone wholesaling as well as the other arms of the Company which included a full service marina in St. Augustine, a condominium development in the Cayman Islands and a professional recording studio in Atlanta.
When Royal Stone moved its headquarters to Virginia in 1982, Mr. Graber elected to stay in South Florida and took a position as a Senior Account Executive with Al Wolfe Associates. While there he oversaw public relations and promotional programs for the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority, Art Deco Hotels and the Muss Organization. This included the Seacoast Towers Challenge Cup, a sailing race between French and Canadian America’s Cup contenders, and the All American Weekend, a Fourth of July celebration and series of concerts on Miami Beach.
In 1984, Mr. Graber became Director of Marketing for the Miami Beach Development Corporation, a non-profit economic development organization involved in the revitalization of South Beach and the Art Deco District. He has been labeled one of the pioneers of South Beach. He is credited with creating programs that were responsible for turning around the economic climate of the area and bringing it worldwide publicity. He produced video and slide presentations, collateral materials, festivals, investment conferences, promotions and media coverage that resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars of investment to South Beach that have made it one of the hottest destinations in the world today.
Mr. Graber currently resides in Kendall, a suburb of Miami, with his wife and three children. He is actively involved in many community and professional associations, including having served as co-chairman of the South Beach Entertainment Association and as Chairman of the Schools of Choice Advisory Board of the Dade County School System. Mr. Graber has received many awards for his efforts including being named best PR professional in Miami by both the New Times and the Sun Post. Perhaps favored most among these is a proclamation from the City of Miami Beach declaring December 1, 1987 as “Woody Graber Day”.
